Herb & Spice Mixes

 

These herb and spice mixes are recreated from archaeological and historical records, so that you can add a bit of authentic ancient flavour to your cooking. We have taken culinary evidence from the ancient Minoans of prehistoric Crete, Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and the Vikings, to create mixes that can be used as a rub or flavouring at home.

 

Minoan Mix

The Minoan civilisation was at its heyday from 2000 to 1450 BC in Crete and other Greek islands. This spice and herb mix is based upon archaeological and ‘linear B’ written evidence from Minoan sites, mixing exotic cumin and coriander with locally grown mint, thyme and fennel. It can be used to add authentic Minoan flavour to any stew, or use as a rub when grilling meat or fish.

 

Egyptian Mix

This Egyptian herb and spice mix is based upon archaeological and written records from ancient Egypt. The Egyptians were trading in exotic spices to compliment some of their home grown herbs, including the introduction of Cassia Cinnamon, imported from Arabia and Ethiopia. Many of this herbs and spices were also used as medicines. Try adding an authentic ancient Egyptian flavour to any stew, or use as a rub when grilling meat or fish.

 

Roman Mix

This Roman spice and herb mix is largely based upon the Roman collection of recipes, known as Apicius, or De re culinaria. It brings together a collection of herbs and spices used throughout a lot of Roman recipes, bringing an authentic flavour to your dishes. It can be used to add authentic Roman flavour to any stew, or use as a rub when grilling meat or fish.

 

Viking Mix

This spice and herb mix is based upon archaeological evidence from Viking sites around northern Europe, such as York and Dublin. The Vikings used horseradish and mustard to add a bit of heat to their cooking. This mix can be used to add authentic Viking flavour to any stew, or add a little olive oil to create a rub for seasoning meat, fish, or poultry before grilling, roasting or barbecuing.

    Roman Mix: Lovage, Thyme, Coriander, Origano, Spearmint, Long Pepper, Dill, CELERY, Savory.

    Viking Mix: Ingredients: Thyme, Nettle, Horseradish, MUSTARD, Fennel, Lovage.
